Trio of Fourth-Inning Home Runs Not Enough Against UMass Boston

Bryant, Perron, and Tempone all hit solo homers in the fourth inning

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Juniors Andrew Bryant, DJ Perron went for back-to-back home runs, and sophomore Matt Tempone tacked on another solo shot in the fourth to even the score, but UMass Boston pulled away for an 8-5 win Tuesday afternoon over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Bryant, Tempone, freshman Scott Cromack, and senior Chase Stafford all finished with two hits for the Corsairs (13-21, 4-10 LEC). The Beacons (23-13, 11-3 LEC) remain in a tie for second place in the conference with Rhode Island College.

UMass Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the first. With one out, Cromack singled and Bryant doubled to left center to put runners on second and third. Perron then brought home Cromack with an RBI groundout to second base.

The Beacons went up in the second. A leadoff single turned into a runner on third after an error on a failed pickoff attempt, and a double brought home the run. An RBI fielder's choice later gave UMass Boston a 2-1 advantage. The road team turned their lead to 4-1 in the third on a solo home run, and a double steal.

The bottom of the fourth was electric for the Corsairs. Bryant and Perron went for back-to-back homers to lead off the inning. Two outs later Tempone sent one deep to center that bounced off the top of the fence and went over for the third long ball of the inning to knot the score at four.

An RBI single gave UMass Boston back the lead in the fifth, and a pair of base hits extended the Beacons' advantage to 8-4 in the sixth.

With the bases loaded for the Corsairs in the seventh, Cromack singled home Tempone to cut the deficit to 8-5, but that was as close as UMass Dartmouth would get.

Graduate student Logan Maitland, sophomore Chase Carey, and freshman Josh Malcolm combined for four scoreless innings on the mound. Malcolm and Cary each struck out two, while Maitland had one K.

UMass Dartmouth is at Roger Williams on Thursday at 3 p.m. for its final non-conference game of the season.
