BRISTOL, R.I. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team earned a Saturday tri-match sweep over SUNY Potsdam, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19), and Roger Williams, 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 25-16, 25-22).
The Corsairs bounced back after dropping their last two matches to improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Bears move to 8-2 and the Hawks drop to 3-6 after getting swept at their own tri-match.
VS. SUNY POTSDAM
Despite the sweep it was a competitive match. Sophomore
Kate Wade led the Corsairs with 13 kills and added eight digs, while junior
Marley Alexander finished with eight kills. On defense, freshman
Emily Pogorelec tallied 22 digs, classmate
Sabrina Bordone had 15Â and junior
Devon Laing finished with 14 digs. Bordone went for 15 assists and fellow freshman
Emma Rousseau had 13.
After SUNY Potsdam started the first set by going up, 6-2, the Corsairs went on a 5-1 run with kills by Laing and Wade to even the score at seven. The teams would go back-and-forth through the middle part of the set until the score was tied at 18. Sophomore
Maggie Sullivan and Wade then got back-to-back kills and sophomore
Chelsea Sanker and Wade kept it going to make it 22-22. A pair of Potsdam errors and an ace from Alexander gave the Corsairs the 1-0 match lead.
Potsdam went up 8-1 in the second set until an 11-4 run by the Corsairs tied the set at 12. The Bears took leads of 15-12 and 19-16, but the Corsairs had an answer each time. Down 21-19, a kill by Laing, an ace from Wade and kills by Alexander and sophomore
Gabriella Monico made it a 2-0 match lead.
The teams traded points in the third set until it was even at 13. An 8-1 run with kills by Wade, Sullivan, Alexander and Wade made it a 21-14 advantage and a kill by Alexander finished off the Bears.
VS. ROGER WILLIAMS
Wade (13 kills, 14 digs) and Laing (13 kills, 10 digs) each posted double-doubles and Alexander finished with 11 kills. Pogorelec tallied 25 digs and Rousseau and Bordone had 24 and 21 assists.
UMass Dartmouth held a slim advantage throughout the first set. With the lead at 12-10, the Corsairs used a 6-1 run with kills by Laing, Sullivan and sophomore
Monika Kristjansdottir to make it an 18-11 lead. Roger Williams brought it to 18-16, but UMass Dartmouth closed the set on a 7-3 run.
Roger Williams never trailed in the second set and broke away late, scoring the final seven out of nine points to even the match at one.
UMass Dartmouth took control in the third set. Up 10-8, a kill by Bordone sparked an 11-4 run to put the Corsairs ahead, 21-12. A kill from Monico and errors by the Hawks gave the Corsairs the 2-1 match advantage.
With the Corsairs trailing the fourth set, 21-19, a block by Sanker and Sullivan jumpstarted a 6-1 run to finish the match on a kill from Wade.
