UMass Dartmouth Takes Four-Set Match Over Lasell

The Corsairs improve to 4-1 at home this season

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Back on its home court, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team took a 3-1 (25-13, 25-27, 25-22, 25-20) decision over Lasell University Thursday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The Corsairs improve to 6-4 on the year and 4-1 at home. Junior Devon Laing and sophomore Kate Wade each finished with double-doubles. Laing tallied 12 kills and 13 digs, while Wade had 12 kills and 11 digs. Junior Marley Alexander registered 10 kills and led the team with six aces. Freshman Emily Pogorelec recorded 19 digs to lead the match and sophomore Gabriella Monico put up 13 digs.

UMass Dartmouth had 16 aces compared to four for the Lasers (6-9).

With the first set tied at four, a Laser error, an ace by Wade and a kill from Alexander sparked a 10-3 run to bring the lead to 14-7. UMass Dartmouth continued to roll as kills by Laing, Alexander and Wade eventually made it 22-11. Back-to-back kills by Alexander and Laing followed by an ace from Wade finished off the first set.

Lasell jumped ahead to an early 7-5 advantage in the second set. UMass Dartmouth then fought back to even the score at 10. A kill and and a ace from the freshmen duo of Sabrina Bordone and Pogorelec then helped put the Corsairs up, 15-13. Lasell then went on an 10-4 run to take a 23-19 lead, but kills by Wade and Alexander evened the score at 25. Consecutive kills from the Lasers evened the match at one.

With the Corsairs behind 17-16, Laing spiked the ball down to knot the score in the third set. Lasell then went ahead, 18-17, but an 8-4 UMass Dartmouth run with kills by sophomore Monika Kristjansdottir, Laing and an ace from Alxander propelled the Corsairs to a 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set went back-and-forth until the score was even at 13. A kill by Wade then jumpstarted a 12-7 run that was finished off with kills by Alexander, Kristjansdottir, Laing and Wade to take the match.

UMass Dartmouth plays two matches on the road on Saturday. The team will first travel to Wellesley at 11 a.m. and will conclude the day at Babson at 3:30 p.m.
