DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team rolled Rhode Island College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-22), Wednesday night at the Tripp Athletic Center for its first Little East Conference win of the year.
Freshman
Emily Pogorelec led the Corsairs, who improve to 8-5 and 1-1 in the LEC, with 17 digs and five aces. Sophomore
Kate Wade was the match leader with nine kills, while junior
Devon Laing added six kills and 11 digs. The Anchorwomen fall to 4-6 and 1-2 in the conference.
It was all UMass Dartmouth in the first set. A kill by sophomore
Gabriella Monico got it started and the Corsairs quickly found themselves ahead, 15-3. Wade, junior
Marley Alexander and sophomore
Chelsea Sanker all had early kills, while freshman
Emma Rousseau tallied three aces in that span. A kill and an ace from Alexander kept it going, a kill by junior
Maggie Sullivan gave the Corsairs a 20-8 lead and Sanker finished it off with a kill.
The second set went just about the same way. This time it was Laing who picked up the first kill to start an 18-5 run. Sophomore
Monika Kristjansdottir had a pair of kills and an ace as the Corsairs ran up the score. After RIC made it 18-11, two kills by Monico, one more from Kristjansdottir, and a Rousseau ace made it a 2-0 match lead.
Rhode Island College stayed competitive in the third set, battling to a 20-20 draw. A kill by freshman
Sabrina Bordone and Wade then gave the Corsairs some separation, and back-to-back kills by Wade closed the match.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Southern Maine for a Saturday tri-match. The Corsairs first face the Huskies at 12 p.m. before meeting Maine-Presque Isle at 2 p.m.
