Corsairs Edged by Fitchburg State in OT

Box Score FITCHBURG, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth men's ice hockey team (4-10-2, 3-6-1 MASCAC) fell short in an overtime bout with Fitchburg State (8-6-2, 6-2-2 MASCAC). The two teams battled in a thriller of a MASCAC contest that resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Falcons.

UMD fell behind early, allowing the first score of the contest to Fitchburg State's sophomore Corey Tumenas. The Falcons were not satisfied just yet and added another goal on a power-play off the stick of senior Anthony Ceolin.

After falling behind 2-0, the Corsairs got the response they needed from senior Michael Perrone with three minutes left in the first. Perrone's score was assisted by freshman Matthew Zdanowicz and junior Dominic Dumas. The first period concluded with UMassD trailing 2-1.

Seven minutes into period number two, the Corsairs capitalized on a man-advantage with a goal from junior Michael Mania. Mania's goal came off passes from Zdanowicz and senior Jake Maynard. The score was evened at 2-2 going into the third stanza.

The two teams competed in the third to try to give their team the late advantage. Both the Corsairs and the Falcons had two power play opportunities, but the short-handed shifts stepped up and held strong. The game remained tied at the end of regulation and would be decided by an overtime period.

These two teams tied in their last matchup back in November, but that would not be the case this time. Fitchburg State senior Joshua Miller scored the game-winning goal, unassisted, just 30 seconds into extra time. Miller's score gave the Falcons the 3-2 OT victory.

Fitchburg State won the faceoff battle 33-21. UMass Dartmouth out-shot the Falcons 38-32.

UMass Dartmouth travels to Salem State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
