Rhode Island College Halts UMass Dartmouth's Win Streak

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team suffered a 77-61 loss to Little East Conference (LEC) leader Rhode Island College on Wednesday. The loss concluded the Corsairs' five-game win streak.

The Corsairs drop to 10-7 overall and hold a 6-2 LEC record. The Anchorwomen advanced to 15-2 and hold an unblemished record of 8-0 against conference opponents.

Just two players scored in double figures for the Corsairs, highlighted by grad student Jordan Moretti with 15 points and five assists. Fellow grad student Jessica Carroll netted 14 points and dished out five assists.

Rhode Island College's seniors led the way in the contest.  Izabelle Booth tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Anchorwomen also got 14 points from Angelina Nordolillo and 12 from Jeniyah Jones.

junior Ally Yamada and senior Morgan Morrison combined for 52 of their team's 78 points. Yamada tallied a game-high 28 points along with four assists and three steals. Morrison snagged 16 rebounds to go with her 24 points.

RIC jumped ahead early, winning the first quarter 20-9. The Corsairs struggled from the field, shooting just 3-for-13 (23.1%) for the quarter. The second quarter started off the same for UMD, allowing the Anchorwomen to get ahead by 19, until grad student Julia Quinn came in off the bench and nailed a three and then a mid-range jumper to narrow the deficit to 14 before the end of the half. Jones converted a layup at the end of the quarter for RIC to go into halftime leading UMassD 35-19.

In the third quarter, the Corsairs continued to struggle offensively, and Rhode Island College extended their lead to 23. UMass Dartmouth was not able to close the distance in the final quarter, either. Carroll sunk a deep ball and two layups at the end of the game, but it proved to be too little, too late. The Corsairs fell 77-61 in the end.

The Anchorwomen dominated the rebound battle 48-to-22. The Corsairs also fouled RIC 18 times while only drawing 11 fouls themselves.

UMass Dartmouth goes back on the road next week, when they travel to Willimantic, Conn. To face the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut. The action tips off on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
