UMass Dartmouth Women's Basketball Win Third Straight LEC Matchup

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team secured a victory over Southern Maine, 78-65, on Saturday.

The Corsairs' overall record advances 7-6, and their conference record improves to 3-1. The Huskies drop to 4-7 and 2-3 in the Little East.

UMass Dartmouth had four players score in double figures, led by grad student Jordan Moretti with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Fellow grad student Jessica Carroll added 15 points of her own and junior Teja Andrews tallied 13.

Southern Maine saw three players put up double-digit points. Freshman Vanessa Vaughn led all scorers with 23 points and seven rebounds, despite coming off the bench for the Huskies. Southern Maine junior Amy Fleming tallied 19 points, going 6/6 from the free throw line in the loss.

The Corsairs got out ahead early, beginning the game with a 20-5 run. They would finish the first quarter leading the Huskies by 19, at 26-7. The second quarter was more of the same, until Southern Maine went on a run to narrow the gap to nine points at halftime. UMD led USM 38-29 at the break.

Entering the third quarter, UMass Dartmouth sought to re-extend their lead, and did just that. In just five minutes, they were back to a comfortable 17-point lead thanks to some good free-throw shooting from several Corsairs. The Huskies threatened a comeback late in the fourth quarter, but efficient free-throw shooting from Moretti, junior Kaylin Zalewski, and grad student Julia Quinn was enough to keep Southern Maine at bay. UMass Dartmouth went on to win this conference matchup 78-65.

The Corsairs did not have their best night shooting from beyond the arc, but was dominant with their aggressive defense. They forced Southern Maine to shoot just 32.3% from the field and 27.8% from distance. They also caused USM to turn the ball over 25 times, and scored 23 points off of those turnovers.

UMass Dartmouth have won four of their last five, and look to continue rolling on Monday when they travel to Western Connecticut for another Little East Conference matchup. Tip-off will be at 1 PM in Danbury, Connecticut.
