Women's Volleyball Improves to 4-0 in Conference Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After dropping the opening set to conference opponent Rhode Island College on Wednesday, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's volleyball team responded by taking three straight sets on their way to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-10, 25-17) victory. The Corsairs have won seven of their last eight matches, and have won all four of their matches in conference play. The Corsairs' record improves to 12-6 overall and are now 4-0 in the Little East Conference (LEC). The Anchorwomen dip to 6-9 overall and slide to 1-4 in the LEC.

After a slow start to the contest where the Corsairs dropped their first set since the beginning of conference action, UMass Dartmouth answered with a dominant showing in the second set. With an 11-9 lead in the set, sophomore Emily Pogorelec took the server's position and started a six-point UMD run, including three service aces of her own. The Corsairs held onto the lead and took the set by a score of 25-15.

The third set was an even more convincing one for UMassD. They jumped ahead to a 6-1 lead early on, and kept compounding on that momentum. The junior pair of Chelsea Sanker and Kate Wade each tallied five and four kills in the set, respectively, as the Corsairs cruised to take the frame, 25-10.

The Corsairs, hoping to avoid a fifth set, continued their strong play into the fourth set. UMass Dartmouth freshman Allison Pate really shined in this set and helped close out the match. She recorded four of her eight total kills in the set, and added a service ace on top of that. Senior Gabriella Monico added three kills of her own later in the set, as the Corsairs closed it out in 3-1 fashion with a 25-17 win in the final frame.

UMass Dartmouth looked dominant once again in their fourth conference match this season. Wade and Sanker headed the attack for UMD with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Additionally, Sanker was in on three block assists and Wade tallied 13 digs. Pogorelec led the team in both digs (31) and service aces (4). Pate had eight kills on the night to go along with two service aces and 13 digs. Freshman setter Skye Peters recorded 30 set assists.

The UMass Dartmouth women's volleyball team is back in action on Saturday, October 14, for an LEC battle with Western Connecticut. The contest is scheduled to start at 1:00PM in the Tripp Athletic Center.
