Field Hockey Falls to Southern Maine in LEC Tilt

Huskies post 7-1 win over Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth field hockey team celebrated its Senior Class on Saturday, hosting the University of Southern Maine in Little East Conference action on Cressy Field. The visiting Huskies came away with a 7-1 victory, improving to 10-6 and remaining perfect at 3-0 in LEC action. The Corsairs slip to 3-10 with a 1-3 mark in conference play. Prior to the game, the Corsairs squad honored its two seniors, Maggie Doherty and Maggie McCafferty. The team also recognized the senior and fifth year players for the Huskies.

The Huskies opened the game's scoring at 2:47 of the first as Abigail Chartier slammed home a feed from Brooke Carson in traffic in the goal mouth. The Corsairs evened the score at 1-all just under 10 minutes later as senior captain Maggie Doherty rifled in a shot off the penalty corner injection from rookie midfielder Sam King.

The score remained the same until the 20:27 mark of the second quarter as Carson picked up her second assist of the game, this time feeding it across to Mary Keef for the score past UMassD keeper Kelsie Couto.

Southern Maine's Hannah Banks made it a 3-1 lead for the visitors heading into halftime and four more goals, including two from Norie Tibbets in the fourth quarter.

The Corsairs nearly converted in the final frame as a shot from senior captain Maggie McCafferty was saved by USM keeper Julianna Kiklis. UMassD got back-to-back penalty corners as junior forward Harley Hodge and rookie midfielder Sam Gacioch both fired in consecutive shots that Kiklis was able to save away.

For the Huskies, Banks and Tibbets each had two goals, while Carson posted three assists. In goal, Eleanor Folsom earned the win, recording two saves. Kiklis came on in relief for the final quarter, making five stops.

The Corsairs saw Doherty with the lone goal as starter Couto notched nine saves over three quarters of action. Junior Hannah Trombly came on for 15 minutes of relief in the third quarter, stopping one shot. McCafferty also posted two defensive saves for UMass Dartmouth.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Bridgewater State for a 7pm non-conference tilt against the Bears.
