DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by an early score from junior
Jillian Swass, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team came away with a 1-1 draw with Eastern Connecticut. It marks their sixth tie of the season for the Corsairs, who find themselves with a record of 2-7-6 overall and sit at 0-3-4 in Little East Conference play. The Warriors find themselves at 4-6-3 with a 1-3-3 record against conference opponents.
22 minutes into the opening half, the Corsairs put themselves on the board first, when freshman
Adriana Adames connected with Swass to score the game's first goal. It marks Swass's first score of the season as well as her first collegiate goal. A few minutes afterwards, UMD had a chance to extend their lead, when junior
Kaitlyn Nguyen had two opportunities in front of the net. Nguyen's attempts were turned away by ECSU's senior goalkeeper Emily Wallace. Both Wallace and UMD's freshman keeper
Grace Conti were busy today, making seven and six saves, respectively.
Eastern Connecticut evened the game prior to the end of the half. With five minutes left before the intermission, ECSU freshman Lauren Weaver found junior Briley Harnois for her first goal of the season. The game went into the break tied at 1-1.
The second half saw plenty of shot attempts, but the contest remained scoreless the rest of the way. UMD freshman
Lauren Widmer had a great chance in the 67
th minute that was turned aside by Wallace. The Warriors had a great look from point-blank on Conti in the 75
th minute, but Conti made back-to-back incredible saves to keep the game even at 1-1.
The Corsairs were out-shot by the Warriors in this one, 16-14, but the Corsairs were more efficient with eight of their attempts on-target to Eastern's seven.
The UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team stays put to host the Lancers from Worcester State on Tuesday, October 24. The 7:00PM game will be played under the lights on Cressy Field.
