BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team's meeting with Wentworth ended in a 1-1 draw. It marks the second tie of the season for the Corsairs, who find themselves with a record of 0-8-2 overall with a 0-3 record in conference matchups, while the Leopards move to 2-8-1 overall and also rest at 0-3 against their conference opponents.
For the second consecutive game, the Corsairs offense opened the scoring early on. In the sixth minute, senior captain
Joey Paiva found sophomore
Nick Mahjoory in the box for his first goal of the season as well as the first of his collegiate career. Wentworth responded in the 26
th minute, when a long shot from WIT senior Jacob Dukeshire slipped past Corsairs' junior keeper
Cole Travers. UMass Dartmouth had another opportunity to score before the half. During the 42
nd minute, freshman
Mario Rodriguez ripped a shot that carried wide left of the target.
The contest became chippy near the end of the first half, when the first two yellow cards were handed to a player from either side. The gamesmanship continued into the second half, where another pair of yellow cards were awarded to each team. Thanks in part to the defensive edge of the two teams, neither side had a great opportunity to take the lead in the second half. Wentworth attempted three shots to the Corsairs' zero in the second half, but none made it past Travers. At the end of the 90
th minute, the scoreboard remained split at 1-1.
The Corsairs and the Leopards each tallied 10 total shots, with four on-target for UMass Dartmouth to just three on-goal for Wentworth. Travers defended the goal for the full 90 minutes, making two saves and allowing one score in the draw. Mahjoory scored his first career goal on an inside feed from Paiva.
UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team competes again on Thursday, October 5
th, for a make-up game with Westfield State that was originally rained out on September 18
th. The Corsairs host the Owls on Cressy Field at 3:30PM.
