Corsairs Cruise to 3-0 Win Over UMass Boston

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by a well-rounded team performance, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's volleyball team came away with a dominant, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) win over conference opponent UMass Boston on Wednesday. The Corsairs have won five of their last six matches, and have taken their last nine consecutive sets. Their strong opening to conference play improves the Corsairs' record to 10-6 overall, and 2-0 in the Little East Conference (LEC). The Beacons dip to 9-6 overall and slide to 0-2 in the LEC.

The Corsairs, who have been rolling of late, set the tone early in the opening set. Senior Devon Laing took over the serve and helped the Corsairs go on a six point run to go up 7-2. Junior Monika Kristjansdottir shined in the first set, where she tallied three kills and three block assists as UMass Dartmouth took the opening set in convincing fashion, 25-13.

UMass Dartmouth carried their momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 18-10 lead. Laing and junior Kate Wade were largely responsible for the success in the second set, as they each recorded four kills, with Wade adding two block assists on top of that. With a 20-14 lead in the set, sophomore Sabrina Bordone took over the serve and guided UMD to five straight points, taking the 2-0 lead in the match after a 25-14 set win.

The third set was very competitive, with the Beacons staying nearby in the score count and at one point boasted an 8-6 lead over the Corsairs. UMass Dartmouth responded with five consecutive points to regain an 11-8 lead. UMass Boston hung around later in the set as well, but the Corsairs ultimately prevailed, 25-18 and took a 3-0 victory over their conference rival.

UMass Dartmouth looked dominant once again in their second conference match this season. Wade and Laing headed the attack with eight kills each. Wade added two service aces, seven total blocks/block assists, and was tied for the team-leader with 14 digs. Kristjansdottir had an impressive performance in the middle blocker position, tallying seven kills and four block assists. Bordone led the way in set assists with 15.

The UMass Dartmouth women's volleyball team will take the road on Saturday, October 7, for an LEC battle with Rhode Island College. The contest is scheduled to start at 1:00PM.
