Third Period Flurry Lifts Hockey to Victory Over Lancers

Johnston scores two goals as Corsairs defeat Worcester State, 4-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Powered by a four-goal third period, which included two goals from winger Kevin Johnston, the UMass Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Worcester State University, 4-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Thursday evening. The Corsairs move to 3-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play, while the Lancers are now 1-3-0 and 1-2-0 in the MASCAC.

After two periods of scoreless action, the Corsair offense kicked into overdrive in the final 20 minutes. Rookie center Collin Patterson started the push at 5:25 after he buried a pass from sophomore defender Hank McDonough for the 1-0 lead. UMass Dartmouth made it a two-goal margin minutes later as Johnston corralled a pass from rookie Ethan Finlason for the 2-0 score at 8:00.

The Lancers answered 43 seconds later as Anders Grongstad put in the puck off a feed from Brendan Ronan, but senior winger Billy McDevitt found the back of the net off a pass from classmate and center Colin Cromie to make it a 3-1 lead at 13:14.

Just over a minute later, the Corsairs tacked on their final score as Johnston netted his second of the contest from grad student winger Michael Perrone on the power play at 14:45.
