DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by the sharp shooting from sophomores
Nic Boyd and
John Marcille, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team posted a 100-64 victory over Bridgewater State on Tuesday evening.
The Corsairs move to 1-4 after securing their first win of the season, while the Bears drop to 2-4 on their season.
It was clear early that the Corsairs' shot was on, when two early threes from Marcille and senior
Jayquan Leonard to open up with an 8-2 lead for UMD. Grad student
Jackson Zancan used his size to dominate the interior, recording three straight contested layups and helping the Corsairs extend their lead to 14-6.
The Bears took their first timeout but came out of the huddle to more of the same. After another two Zancan lay-ins, Boyd nailed back-to-back threes that put UMass Dartmouth up by 16 at the 12:12 mark in the first half. The Corsairs continued with their downhill momentum and finished the first half leading 44-27.
Bridgewater State began to whittle down the gap at the start of the second half, narrowing it to a 13-point deficit following a putback layup by sophomore Steven Morrell. UMass Dartmouth responded with a huge 14-1 run, featuring a steal and powerful dunk from senior
Isaac Percy that had the Tripp Center roaring.
Marcille had his moment in the second half, sinking a three ball before slamming home a fastbreak dunk of his own to put the Corsairs up 70-38 at the 12:25 mark. UMD's hot shooting night continued as Boyd poured it on with two more threes. A Marcille layup gave UMass Dartmouth its biggest lead of the night at 90-49 with 6:47 left on the clock. The Corsairs were able to get the reserves some time on the floor as they cruised to a dominant, 100-64 win over Bridgewater State.
Sophomore guard Dante Kikuba paced the Bears, recording 13 points with nine rebounds, adding four assists and three steals. BSU struggled to find themselves from deep, shooting just 7.4% from beyond the arc.
The Corsairs were paced by Marcille and Boyd, who each posted game-highs with 23 points each. Marcille added 11 boards to complete the double-double, and shot 9 for 16 from the field and 4 for 9 from deep. Boyd went 6 for 13 from long range. Percy recorded 17 points with six rebounds, four blocks and two steals before fouling out of the game. Zancan posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
UMass Dartmouth will stay put and look forward to hosting Tufts on Saturday, December 2
nd. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00PM at the Tripp Athletic Center.
