Men's Hockey Falls to Plymouth State in MASCAC Action

Panthers post 3-1 win over Corsairs in hard-fought game

FALMOUTH, Mass. – Behind a pair of third period tallies, Plymouth State University posted a 3-1 win over UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Thursday evening at the Falmouth Ice Arena. The victory moves the Panthers to 7-1-2 with a 5-0-2 mark in the conference. The Corsairs slip to 4-4-0 and 3-3-0 in the MASCAC.

Locked in a 1-all tie after two periods of play, the visiting Panthers nabbed the go-ahead tally as junior right winger Anton Jellvik grabbed the puck just inside the neutral zone. He sent a heads-up pass to linemate Connor Tait, who battled around a Corsairs defender before shifting right at the goal mouth for the wrist shot over the shoulder of Daniel Davidson at 17:42.

The Panthers went on to nab an empty net tally as sophomore center Will Redick slid midway through the neutral zone and fired a shot into the right corner of the open goal with less than a minute to play.

UMass Dartmouth went on the power play with less than 30 seconds to play, seeing senior defender Cade Hanley and center Michael Mania each put shots on goal, but Panthers senior goalie Kalle Andersson held steady in the closing seconds.

The Corsairs opened the game's scoring in the first period as graduate winger Michael Perrone sent a sharp pass to sophomore defender Lane Ruffner in the high slot. Ruffner sent the puck into the right circle as rookie center Collin Patterson slid in low and fired the puck past Andersson at 14:21. The goal came on the power play as PSU's Ethan Stuckless was tagged for a double minor.

Plymouth State netted the equalizer at 4:08 of the second, capitalizing on a UMassD penalty as sophomore defenseman Rider McCallum passed the puck to Jellvik. He was able to send it to Redick, who sent it in past Davidson for the 1-all score.

Andersson posted the victory in net for the Panthers, recording 28 saves, including 12 in the opening frame and 10 in the third period. Junio center Ethan Stuckless was 15-10 on the faceoff, while rookie center Andrew Stuckless had a 12-4 margin in the circle.

For the Corsairs, Davidson made 50 saves in the loss, including 15 in the first, 14 in the second and 21 in the third period. Mania posted a 6-9 mark in the circle, while rookie center Connor Little had an 11-17 mark.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Western Massachusetts for a 5:35pm conference match-up at Westfield State.
