NORTON, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth struggled offensively as they fall, 1-7, to Wheaton College on Tuesday. The Corsairs (9-4) drop their fourth game of the season, while the Lyons advance to 9-2 to start their year. UMass Dartmouth will look to get back on the right track as they make their home debut on Wednesday.
Wheaton jumped ahead early with a three-run bottom of the first. They added an additional run in the second inning before rallying three more runs in the seventh, while the Corsairs remained scoreless through eight innings.Â
UMD found themselves trailing 0-7 going into the ninth inning with their final chance to make a comeback. Junior T.J. Keefe got on base for the Corsairs on a walk, he then stole second base and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Keefe was knocked in for UMD's first run of the contest on a triple from his classmate, Matt Tempone, with two outs.Â
The Lyons were led offensively by senior Mike Maher, who went 5-for-5 from the plate and scored twice. Senior Nick Croteau went 2-for-5, including a two-run homerun in the seventh inning. Wheaton's junior AJ Guindon also tallied two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Earning the win on the mound for the Lyons was junior Liam Goldthwaite (3-0). Goldthwaite improves to 3-and-0 for the season by allowing four hits on 24 batters faced.Â
UMass Dartmouth's offense was headed by Keefe, who had two hits, a walk, and scored their only run. Tempone went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. Just one other Corsair earned a hit in this contest in senior DJ Perron who doubled to right center in the seventh. Shouldering the loss on the mound was junior Will Pacheco (1-1), his first of the season. Also seeing action on the mound was senior Adam Horowitz and sophomore Josh Malcolm.
UMass Dartmouth will look to get back on the right track as they make their home debut on Wednesday in a rematch with Wheaton College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 PM.Â
