Corsairs Slip to Curry College in Overtime

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - A goal from Curry College sophomore Grayson Goolgasian with five seconds remaining in the first frame of overtime lifted the Colonels over UMass Dartmouth, 12-11, in women's lacrosse action on Cressy Field. With the victory, the Colonels start their season 2-0, while the Corsairs slip to 1-1. 
 
Holding a 9-7 lead after three quarters of play, Corsairs' junior Melanny Sanchez Alvarez scored at 10:08 of the final frame, to put the home team up 10-7. Curry surged back into it minutes later, scoring three unanswered to tie it at 10-all with 5:31 remaining. 
 
Curry's Ellie Hardman tallied on the free-position while goals from Goolgasian and Chloe Chevrier made it 10-10 with 5:31 on the clock. The Colonels got the go-ahead on Goolgasian's tally at 2:09, but the Corsairs tied it up as freshman Maddie Wright scored a diving goal in front with :32 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. 
 
In the extra session, the Corsairs nearly won it off the stick of junior Hannah Mitus, but a point-blank save by Colonel's sophomore goalkeeper Vivi Helquist kept it tied.  In the closing seconds, Goolgasian won it for the visitors with a wrap-around tally pass the reach of UMD senior goalie Peyton Conceicao.
 
Goolgasian paced the offensive effort for the Colonels, scoring four goals. She also added seven ground balls and a caused turnover. Chevrier added three goals and five ground balls. Natalie Keenan netted three goals and dished two assists. Helquist stopped four shots in goal for Curry.
 
Sanchez Alvarez led the way for the Corsairs with a game-high five goals. She also added nine ground balls, four caused turnovers and two assists. Wright tallied four goals and is up to 12 so far in her debut season. Wright also led the game with 15 draw controls. Mitus was the other scorer for UMD. In the net, Conceicao stopped 11 on-target shots. 
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Husson. The contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
