Baseball Drops First Game in Matchup with RIC, Second Meeting in Two Weeks

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UMass Dartmouth's baseball team fell in a four-run hole in the first inning that they did not climb out, as they fell 2-12 to Rhode Island College on Tuesday. The Corsairs slip to 12-11 for the season with a 3-4 conference record, while the Anchormen advance to 16-10 and hold a record of 6-1 against conference opponents. These LEC foes are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, April 25.

RIC jumped ahead early with a four-run bottom of the first. The Corsairs were able to gain a run back in the second inning, but the bottom of the second would be the last scoreless at-bat for the Anchormen. They added one run in the third, two in the fourth and fifth, and finally three more in the sixth as UMassD struggled to get their own bats going.

Senior DJ Perron had the best day at the plate for the Corsairs, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Junior T.J. Keefe notched two hits in his three at bats, and freshman Chase Stafford scored a run and added an RBI. Shouldering the loss on the mound for the Corsairs was Nathan Potter (1-1), but seeing the majority of action was senior Adam Horowitz, who went four innings and struck out four.

Leading the bats for the Anchormen was junior Cameron Santerre, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI's and scored four times. Freshman Lucas McElroy went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored. RIC also saw multiple hits and an RBI from junior Cole Podedworny, senior Joey Coro and junior Izaiah Rivera. Earning the win on the mound was Connor Davey (4-2) who went six innings and struck out four.

UMass Dartmouth looks forward to their weekend doubleheader with Castleton Unoversity. Game one begins on Saturday at 12pm.
