Box Score 2 DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by a four-hit complete game from junior Kaitlyn Shirshac in game two, the UMass Dartmouth softball team swept UMass Boston in a road doubleheader on Tuesday. The Corsairs posted a 6-4 victory in game one and won game two by a score of 7-0. UMD improves to 19-10 on the season and hold a 6-4 record in the LEC, while UMB is 17-10 overall and fall to 4-5 in conference play.
UMass Boston jumped ahead early, as the Corsairs found themselves at a 4-1 deficit after five innings of game one. UMD's bats took off in the top of the sixth, beginning with sophomore Larissa Piessens who opened the inning with a lead-off double to center field. Junior Hailey Lyons followed her with a double of her own to score Piessens. Freshman Emma Talpey pinch ran for Lyons on second, where she would score on a throwing error after a flyout off the bat of grad student Lindsay Chubbuck.
The Corsairs capitalized on a few more defensive errors as they scored a run after a single from grad student Leah Major. The Beacons were finally able to get out of the inning, but not before UMass Dartmouth had taken its first lead of the day. In the top of the seventh, Lyons singled with just one out. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a single by Chubbuck. Lyons scored the Corsairs' final run of the inning on a wild pitch, extending their lead to two runs. Grad student Jill Richards did a great job on the mound, keeping the bats of the Beacons at bay in the later innings, as the Corsairs win, 6-4 in game one.
Offensively, the Corsairs were led by Major and Lyons, who each tallied two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Piessens added two hits and scored twice. Richards earned her seventh win on the mound and sits at 7-7 for the season.
UMass Dartmouth carried their momentum into game two, as they won by a seven run margin and marked another shutout victory for Shirshac on the mound. After going up 1-0 in the first inning, it became a defensive battle for the middle innings of game number two. It wasn't until the top of the sixth inning when the Corsairs' bats woke back up, and rallied off five quick runs to go up 6-0. UMass Dartmouth scored one more run in the top of the seventh but it wasn't needed, as Shirshac and UMD's defense was strong enough to shut out the Beacons whilst allowing just four hits.
Chubbuck led UMD offensively with a hit and two RBI's. Perregaux went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Lyons and Shirshac also added a hit and RBI, each. On the mound, Shirshac faced 28 batters, striking out 10 and allowing just four hits. Her record advances to 11-2 for the season.
The Corsairs have a week off before their next game, when they host Keene State in Little East doubleheader action on Tuesday, April 25th. Game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
