DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by several high-offense efforts in the early innings, the Roger Williams University baseball team defeated UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 13-22 overall with the victory, while the Corsairs slip to 17-17 on the season.
The Hawks opened the game with a seven-run first inning. Leading 1-0 off a sacrifice fly from third baseman Matt Massaro, Roger Williams saw six straight runs come across as the visitors got a two-run single to right from shortstop Mike Masino. An error saw another run score and an RBI-single to short by right fielder Owen Hibbard made it a 7-0 margin after the first half inning.
With the Hawks holding a 14-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, the Corsairs bats finally came alive as a single from shortstop
Adam Horowitz, coupled with a single to left by second baseman
Owen Taber saw UMD with runners in scoring position. A single up the middle from third baseman
Jacob Moniz drove in a run and a single from left fielder
Chris Kustigian with one out on the board brought in the second run for the home team.
The Corsairs grabbed their third run as designated hitter
Matthew Klett singled to left, allowing Moniz to score, but the Hawks pitchers got the UMD batters out to close out the inning.
After adding four runs in the top of the fourth, the Hawks had another statement inning in the top of the fifth, tacking on seven more runs, including a grand slam homerun by designated hitter Trevor Smith to give Roger Williams a 25-3 lead.
The Corsairs were unable to get anymore runs across as RWU posted five more over the final three innings to close out the 30-3 victory.
Morin paced the way for the Hawks, going 4-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBI. Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI, while centerfielder Matt Falvey was 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Starting pitcher MarkAnthony Glickman earned the win, going 3.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out four batters and did not walk any. Rookie Will Ernst earned the save, coming on in the ninth with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
For the Corsairs, Taber was 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a run scored. Klett posted a hit with an RBI, while Kustigian also had a hit and an RBI. Horowitz had a run scored and a hit in the contest. On the mound, starter
Braedon Jones shouldered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits.
UMD returns to action with their final regular season games on Friday. The Corsairs welcome Keene State for Senior Day with the doubleheader getting underway at 12pm.
