Lyons get big fourth quarter enroute to win over Corsairs

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College had an offensive fourth quarter, leading to a solid non-conference victory over UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday night at Diane Nordin Athletic Field. The Lyons improve to 3-1 on the season with the 7-0 victory, while the Corsairs slip to 1-4 on the young season.

First quarter action saw the home team get on the scoreboard first, but the opening chance came in favor of the Corsairs. On a penalty corner insert by junior forward Harley Hodge, classmate and fellow forward Jenna Carvalho fired in a shot that went just wide.

Wheaton took the 1-0 lead three minutes later as senior forward Anda Brown scored her third of the season. The Lyons nearly had another chance at 8:54 as junior keeper Hannah Trombly stopped a Mackenzie Yates attempt.

Second quarter action opened with four straight penalty corners for the Lyons as junior midfielder Macey Poitras-Cote got a shot in on Trombly for the stop. The Lyons put two more shots by junior midfielder Lydia Gaudreau into play, but the UMass Dartmouth defense blocked the shots to keep it 1-0.

Trombly continued to hold strong mid-way through the frame, stopping shots from Brown and sophomore forward Riley Levrault. Wheaton continued to press late in the quarter, finally breaking through as first year forward Ally Slicer buried a kick-saved ball past the Corsairs defense for the 2-0 advantage with 2:25 remaining till half.

Wheaton was awarded two more penalty corners in the final minutes, but Trombly made another stop and the teams headed into the intermission with the home team holding a two-goal advantage.
Third quarter action opened with another goal in favor of the home team as Brown connected on a pass from sophomore midfielder Mackenna Cooke for her second of the contest and fourth of the season in the opening two minutes of play.

UMass Dartmouth had a solid chance three minutes later as Carvalho broke into the zone, firing in a shot that senior goalie Emma Lapreziosa stopped to keep the Corsairs off the board.

In the final frame, the Lyons tacked on two more tallies as Gaudreau buried a feed from Poitras-Cote in the 48th minute of action of the game, while Slicer tacked on her second of the game and fifth overall for Wheaton a minute later for the 5-0 lead.

The Corsairs made a change in goal, bringing in sophomore Kelsie Couto, who was immediately tested with back-to-back penalty corners, making a key stop against Slicer – looking for her third of the contest. In the closing minutes of the game, Brown and Slicer both added to the home teams total to close out the victory for the Lyons.

Wheaton saw Brown record the hattrick with three goals, while Slicer also posted three tallies. In goal, Lapreziosa recorded one save.
