Corsairs Victorious in Day One of Home Invitational

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's volleyball team hosted day one of the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Friday. The Corsairs competed in the opening block of games, defeating Roger Williams University 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-18). Roger Williams competed again later in the night, where they suffered a second 3-0 loss to Babson College.

After one day of competition, the Corsairs advance to 4-4 overall as the Hawks slide to 3-4. UMass Boston took a 3-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College to advance to 5-3 while the Lyons dip to 4-3. Babson College came out on top in their only match of the day to land at 6-1 going into day two.

UMass Dartmouth had a dominant showing in their first contest of their home Invitational. They cruised to a 25-14 victory of the opening set thanks to a nine-point run on junior Kate Wade's service. Wade also closed out the set, scoring the 23rd and 25th points on her kills. Splitting Wade's kills was a kill from her classmate Chelsea Sanker.

Junior Monika Kristjansdottir helped establish a Corsairs lead in the second set with a solo-block and a kill to put UMD up 8-4. The Corsairs led 22-17 when three straight points closed out the second set on senior Maggie Sullivan's serves.

Roger Williams jumped ahead early in the third set with four unanswered points. The Corsairs were trailing 10-9 when they rattled off six straight points, this time on serves from freshman Skye Peters, to take a 15-10 lead in the set. UMass Dartmouth was able to continue to separate themselves from the Hawks, going on to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Wade had a great game all-around for the Corsairs, leading the team with 12 kills on 31 attempts. Wade also tallied three service aces and seven digs. Leading the Corsairs' defense was sophomore Emily Pogorelec with 18 digs and Peters with 11. Peters also led the team in assists with 16 assists from the setter position. The senior pair of Maggie Sullivan and Gabriella Monico had three blocks each.

The UMass Dartmouth Invitational continues tomorrow, featuring Roger Williams, Mount Holyoke, Babson and UMass Boston. The first match of the day will feature UMass Dartmouth against Mount Holyoke College at 10am. The Corsairs will have a second match at 2pm in a battle the Beavers of Babson College.
