He served as the National Chairman of the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee and was the 1997 recipient of the Jack Butterfield Award – given in recognition of distinguished service and promotion of college baseball.
The 1998 Little East Conference Coach of the Year, Wheeler guided the Corsairs to one of their finest seasons in 1998 as the squad went 31-12, reaching the NCAA Division III Regional finals. In addition to his storied career with the baseball program, Wheeler also coached basketball for SMU from 1972 to 1983, posting a 133-131 career record over 11 seasons.
