Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's volleyball team finished on the wrong side of a very even, five-set match with Wheaton on Friday. The 3-2 loss puts the Corsairs at 2-3 on the season, while the Lyons remain a perfect 4-0. The Corsairs' scheduled bout with Roger Williams University was canceled due to poor court conditions.
After falling short in a 25-27 first set, UMass Dartmouth responded with a comfortable second-set win, 25-15. Sophomore
Emily Pogorelec took over the serve while trailing 3-2, and led a six-point rally including back-to-back service aces. The Corsairs capitalized on four ball handling errors by the Lyons, going on to win the set 25-15.
Wheaton was able to respond with a 25-18 win of the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Lyons started off the fourth set hot, getting off to a 7-3 lead. An ace and a ball handling error off sophomore
Sabrina Bordone's serves helped bring UMD within one. Freshman
Allison Pate made an impact with her service in the third set, leading the Corsairs to five straight points with help from a trio of senior blockers up front in
Gabriella Monico,
Maggie Sullivan and
Devon Laing. Junior
Chelsea Sanker closed out the fourth set for the Corsairs with two kills and a block in short order, as UMD took the set, 25-20.
After forcing the fifth set, the Corsairs were unable to keep up with the Lyons after a four-point stretch put Wheaton up, 12-9. A kill from Laing gave service back to the Corsairs while trailing 13-10, but the Lyons scored the next two points to take the set and the match.
Leading the attack for UMass Dartmouth was junior
Kate Wade, who tallied 11 kills on 33 attempts. Laing and Sanker each added nine kills of their own. Freshman
Skye Peters led the team with 19 assists, shortly followed by Bordone who had 14. Pogorelec led the way in digs with 17.
The Lyons saw 14 kills from sophomore Sydney Lyon and 13 kills from her classmate, Celina Henn. Senior setter Julianna Flack tallied 36 total assists.
UMass Dartmouth women's volleyball continues their road trip on Saturday, as they travel to Weston, Mass. for two matches against the Rams of Suffolk University and the Pride of Regis College. The match times are scheduled for 1pm and 3pm.
