Corsairs Drop First LEC Game to Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team's seven-game win streak came to a close in a 64-70 loss to Southern Maine in Little East action on Thursday. The loss marks the first conference loss for the Corsairs, moving them to 8-6  overall and 5-1 in the LEC. The Huskies improve to 7-7 with a 3-3 mark in conference play.
 
With the score tied at 33-33 after the first half of play, the Corsairs jumped out to a five-point lead to start the second half. A lay-in by senior Isaac Percy followed by a three-pointer from fifth-year senior Jackson Zancan that put UMD up 44-39 at the 16:26 mark. Southern Maine responded with a six-point run of their own, powered by an and-one from freshman Brady Saunders and a three-pointer from freshman Justin Allen that reclaimed a one-point lead for the Huskies.

With 7:29 to go, USM took their largest lead of so far of six thanks to another Allen three-pointer. The Huskies defense held strong in the second half, limiting UMass Dartmouth to just one field goal in the final seven minutes of action. The University of Southern Maine held on to defeat UMass Dartmouth, 70-64.
  
Southern Maine was paced throughout by sophomore Tommy Whelan with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on 8 of 14 from the field. The Huskies saw three other players score in double-figures, featuring 15 points and eight rebounds from senior Chance Dixon 13 points from Cody Hawes who went 6 for 8 from the floor. Allen went 4 for 7 from three for 12 points. Southern Maine out-scored the Corsairs in the paint, 32-20.
 
UMass Dartmouth was paced by sophomore Josh Lopes, who recorded a game-high 20 points. Then Corsairs saw two others score in double-figures, including 11 points from Percy and 10 points from sophomore Ryan Flauto. Flauto was 5 for 5 from the field.

The Corsairs return to action on Saturday, welcoming Western Connecticut to the Tripp Athletic Center for a 3pm LEC game against the Wolves.
