DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Behind an overtime tally at 1:42 from sophomore winger
Tyler Stewart, the UMass Dartmouth men's hockey team posted a 4-3 victory over Worcester State in MASCAC action on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs – who have won five-straight contests – move to 9-6-0 overall and 7-4-0 in conference play, while the Lancers are now 4-11-0 and 3-8-0 in the MASCAC.
The homestanding Corsairs owned a 3-2 lead until the 14:53 mark of the third period as Worcester State's Brendan Ronan buried a power play shot on the doorstep past the reach of UMass Dartmouth goalie
Marshall McKallip that saw the game tied.
Both teams had their opportunities over the remainder of the frame, but solid work on both ends of the ice by McKallip and Lancers' goalie Wyatt Friedlander saw the teams head into overtime.
In the extra session, the Corsairs won the opening faceoff with senior captain and defender
Jake Maynard carrying it into the zone, skating in close as WSU's Christian Phinney was called for the hook as Maynard went down.
UMass Dartmouth continued to press, winning the faceoff as Maynard shot a pass out to sophomore defender
Lane Ruffner in the mid-slot. His shot was initially saved by Friedlander, but the puck shot out loose to the left side as Stewart was there to bury it for the game-winning tally.
The home team opened the game's scoring at 18:12 of the first as rookie center
Collin Patterson drove home a long pass from grad winger
Michael Perrone. UMass Dartmouth made it a 2-0 lead at 3:15 of the second period as Stewart converted a pass from Maynard.
Worcester State responded as Phinney scored less than a minute later, but Perrone pushed the advantage back to two at 13:51, banking the puck into the open net off a pass from rookie winger
Alex Walker with Patterson earning the secondary assist. The Lancers added another score at 18:05, setting up the game-tying tally in the third.
In the net, McKallip recorded 38 saves, including 18 in the first, 10 in the second and third periods and zero in the overtime session. Friedlander posted 41 saves, registering 12 in the first, 10 in the second, 17 in the third and two in OT.
The Corsairs owned a 59-36 margin in faceoffs as rookie center
Nolan Wutzke went 19-8. Senior centers
Michael Mania and
Colin Cromie were 14-7 and 12-5, respectively in the circle.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the ice on Thursday, January 18 with a 7pm game at Salem State University.
