NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Powered by a nine-goal effort, including five in the second period, the UMass Dartmouth men's hockey team recorded a 9-2 win over Framingham State in MASCAC action on Saturday at Hetland Arena. The Corsairs move to 12-7-0 overall and 10-5-0 in conference action. The Rams are now 7-11-0 and 7-8-0 in the MASCAC.
The nine goals scored by the Corsairs marked the most since November 17, 2018, when UMass Dartmouth defeated the Rams 9-0 at Hetland. Tonight's game saw four different Corsairs record a goal, including a hat trick from senior center
Michael Mania.
Mania opened the game's scoring in the first period after he tipped in a shot from the top of the slot by senior winger
Billy McDevitt. UMass made it a 2-0 score at 10:09 of the frame as the puck was tipped into the air by sophomore winger
Tyler Stewart. The puck caromed into the Rams zone as Mania got the breakaway and tipped it past FSU's Trevor Stenberg.
In the second period, the Corsairs got things going quickly, opening up a three-goal margin as grad student winger
Michael Perrone buried a feed from rookie center
Collin Patterson. The tally saw senior defender
Stephon Perreault garner the secondary assist.
The Corsairs went up by a 4-0 margin at 4:35 as Mania completed the hat trick, driving home a pass from Stewart on the power play. It was Patterson who pushed the home team out to a wide margin, starting at 6:57 as he banked in a pass from sophomore defender
Lane Ruffner from the left circle. Perrone earned the second assist on the play.
Patterson moved the score to 6-0 at 7:34 after a pull down in the goal mouth resulted in a Corsairs penalty shot. Moving into the zone, Patterson buried a shot five-hole against rookie goalie Alex Timmons. The Rams answered at 11:20 as Brady Rossbach converted a Brent Scott feed, but Perrone answered once again for UMass, connecting on a pass from Patterson and rookie winger
Alex Walker at 19:41 to close out the scoring in the frame.
Holding a 7-1 lead in the third, the Corsairs got back-to-back power play tallies from Walker to push the margin to 9-1. Framingham State added a second goal from Scott, but the Corsairs closed out the frame for the seven-goal victory.
In addition to Mania, who went 6-11 in the faceoff circle, the Corsairs saw Patterson with two goals and two assists on the night, also going 12-19 on the faceoff. Stewart recorded three assists, while Perrone had two goals and a helper. Defender and captain
Jake Maynard, Ruffner, Perreault and McDevitt all recorded an assist as McKallip earned the victory in goal with 20 saves.
The Rams saw Stenberg play 26:57 minutes of action, recording 12 stops before giving way to Timmons, who had 10 saves on the evening.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the ice on Thursday, hosting Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in MASCAC action. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
