Adames Game Winner Lifts Women's Soccer Over Rhode Island, 1-0

Corsairs defeat the Anchorwomen for first conference win of the season

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Adriana Adames lifts the UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team over Rhode Island College, 1-0, on Wednesday night to secure the first Little East Conference (LEC) win of the season. The Corsairs are now 1-4 in league play with the victory against the Anchorwomen who fell to 1-4-1 with tonight's loss.

First year Phoebe Gesner opened the first half of the game with an early shot on frame to test Rhode Island goalkeeper Chloe Angelone. The Anchorwomen responded by firing the next four shots of the contest featuring the first pair of saves by first year goalkeeper Tori Russo.

Neither team registered a shot for the remainder of the first half with the score staying deadlocked at 0-0 heading into halftime. Rhode Island started the second half strong on the attack as Karol Matamoros ripped two consecutive strikes with Russo posting a save to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

UMass Dartmouth's offense gradually came alive as Adames and sophomore Madison Depina each recorded a shot apiece. At the 60:35 mark, the Corsairs earned a free kick chance just outside the Rhode Island penalty box. Adames stepped to take the free kick and laced the ball into the top right corner to give UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead in the game.

Rhode Island continued to put pressure on the Corsairs backline as Brooklyn Marinelli drilled as shot on target that Russo was able to stop. Midway through the second half, the Anchorwomen produced six shot attempts highlighted by another two saves by Russo.

Depina posted her second shot of the night approaching the last 15 minutes of action that Angelone scoped up for her third save of the contest. The Anchorwomen's offense tacked on five late shots in the remaining 10 minutes of play, but the Corsairs defense held off Rhode Island to secure their first conference win of the season by a final score of 1-0 from Cressy Field.

Despite the score, Rhode Island outshot UMass Dartmouth 22-6 and also held a 10-4 advantage in shots on-goal. The Anchorwomen also won the corner kick battle with four on the night while the Corsairs earned two corner kicks in the game.

Adames netted her third goal of the season along with her second career game-winner to lift UMass Dartmouth over Rhode Island in LEC action. Adames and Depina ended the night with two shots apiece for the Corsairs while Gesner and first year Ashlyn Aguiar each  posted one strike.

Russo earned her first collegiate win in net for the Corsairs along with her first career shutout with her 10-save performance. Angelone picked up the loss for Rhode Island after making three saves and allowing one goal after 90 minutes of play.

UMass Dartmouth will host the Spartans of Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday, Oct. 19 for their Senior Day game. The conference tilt is slated for a 12:00 pm kickoff from Cressy Field.
