GORHAM, Maine – Southern Maine capitalized on a three-goal opening quarter to defeat UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improve to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in conference action with the 6-1 win, while the Corsairs slip to 4-12 and 1-3 in the LEC.
The Huskies took a quick lead as Sage Drinkwater recorded her seventh and eighth goals of the season in the opening 3:41 of the contest. At the 7:26 mark, Southern Maine saw Norie Tibbetts tally to open up a 3-0 advantage for the home team.
After a scoreless second quarter of action, Tibbets added her second of the contest in the third quarter, opening a 4-0 margin at 31:56. The Huskies added a goal from Abigail Chartier in the fourth quarter before the Corsairs countered to get on the board. Sophomore defender
Sophia Bouffard netted her seventh of the season at 52:42 to cut the Southern Maine lead.
The homestanding Huskies added final goal at 52:56 as Brooke Carson buried a feed from Emma Samson to conclude the game's scoring.
USM saw Eleanor Folson and Katie Hanlon split the match in goal as Folson recorded one save as the game's starter for the win, while Hanlon made four saves in relief.
For the Corsairs, starter
Hannah Trombly shouldered the loss, recording three saves in the opening 30 minutes. Rookie
Shane Cueman came on in relief, making seven stops in the second half.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the field on Wednesday when it travels to Nichols College for a 7pm non-conference tilt against the Bison.
