Men's Soccer Falls to VTSU Castleton on the Road, 3-0

CASTLETON, Vt. – The UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team fell to Vermont State University Castleton, 3-0, on Saturday during Little East Conference (LEC) play. The Corsairs dropped to 0-4-2 in conference action while the Spartans improved to a 2-4-0 LEC record.
 
Spartans Tanner Curtis opened the game with an early shot off a header attempt that went wide left of the net and out of play in the second minuet of action. First years Daniel Jordan and Brennan Hill each fired a shot for the first pair of strikes by the Corsairs.
 
At the 20:17 mark, Castleton took a 1-0 edge with a score by Matt Spiller off the assist from Adolphe Alfani. UMass Dartmouth's goalkeeper Ethan Donahue posted his first save of the day to deny a shot attempt by Sean Butler. The Corsairs started to gain attacking momentum in the closing minutes of the half as fifth-year forward Joey Paiva ripped a shot on frame to force the first stop of the day for Spartans goalkeeper Xander Berthiaume.
 
The home team then regained possession of the ball building their offense and generating two shots and three corner kicks. Shortly after Paiva recorded another shot on target, the Spartans snagged their second goal of the day thanks to Nate Wood in the 44th minute to take a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
 
First year Matthew Suprenard kicked off the second half for the Corsairs with a header attempt that went over crossbar and out of play. UMass Dartmouth found themselves down a player after receiving a red card in the 56th minute of action to give Castleton the man-advantage.
 
The Spartans wasted no time snagging a 3-0 lead with Seth Dube netting his second score of the season to give the home side a three-goal advantage. Sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Porter entered the game for the Corsairs with 26 minutes left in the contest, respectively. Both teams exchanged shots in the half with first year Delano Costa and junior Leo Brittes each tallying a shot apiece, but the Spartans sealed their victory by a final score of 3-0.
 
Castleton held a 11-7 margin in total shots along with a 7-2 advantage in total shots on-goal. UMass Dartmouth won the corner kick battle earning five on the day while Castleton recorded four corner kicks. The home team produced 14 total fouls in the contest compared to the Corsairs with six called fouls.
 
Paiva led the squad with his pair of shots on frame while Hill, Suprenard, Jordan, Costa, and Brittes each notched one shot apiece for UMass Dartmouth. Donahue shouldered the loss after making three stops and allowing three goals. Porter, making his second appearance in net for the Corsairs, finished the game posting one save after 25 minutes of action.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns home to host Bridgewater State University on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The non-conference matchup is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm from Cressy Field.
