Volleyball Powers Past Anchorwomen, 3-0

Seutter and Wade combine for 25 kills in win over Rhode Island College

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – A solid all-around effort powered the UMass Dartmouth volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-14, 15-12, 25-14) win over Rhode Island College in Little East Conference action on Wednesday at Tripp Gymnasium. With the victory, the Corsairs move to 17-5 overall and 5-0 in conference action, while the Anchorwomen slip to 11-7 and 2-4 in the LEC.
 
Rookie right side Olivia Seutter led the way for UMassD, notching a match-high 15 kills with just one error on 35 total swings for a .400 hitting percentage on the night. She also added a block assist and three digs. Senior captain and outside hitter Kate Wade dropped in 10 kills with one error on 26 attempts for a .346 percentage, adding 12 digs. Junior defensive specialist and captain Emily Pogorelec posted 15 digs with a service ace, while senior middle blocker Monika Kristjansdottir posted three kills and three service aces with a block assist and five digs.
 
Sophomore setter Skye Peters laid down 25 assists with eight digs, while junior setter and captain Sabrina Bordone added 13 assists, a service ace and seven digs on the night.
 
Opening set action saw the Corsairs open up a solid 9-4 lead behind three kills from Wade and several errors by the Anchorwomen. RIC capitalized on a UMassD serving error (11-7), but the Corsairs countered with a 6-0 run powered by a pair of kills from senior opposite and captain Chelsea Sanker to open a 17-7 lead.
 
Holding a 21-9 advantage following another Wade strike, the visitors battled back with kills from Andrayah Williams and Sydnee Pires but could not hold back the home team. The Corsairs got kills from Seutter, sophomore outside hitter Ella Soutter and Sanker to close out the set win.
 
Second saw the Anchorwomen open up a quick 3-2 lead following several attacking errors by the Corsairs, but a 6-0 run, aided by a pair of aces from Kristjansdottir saw the home team return to the lead by an 8-3 score. The Corsairs opened up a 15-9 advantage following a bad set by the visitors and seven straight points lifted UMass Dartmouth to the 22-10 score.
 
Rhode Island College battled back with two straight points, but the home team took advantage of two errors and a kill from Seutter to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Final set action once again opened with a UMassD lead as a strike from Wade made it a 7-4 margin. An ace from Pogorelec pushed the score to 14-7 for the Corsairs and a 5-0 run down the stretch, behind a number of errors from the Anchorwomen, helped seal the match win.
 
The Corsairs posted 42 kills in the match, notching just six errors on 113 attempts for a .319 hitting percentage. UMassD also had a 42-17 advantage in assists and held a 65-60 margin in digs for the match.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Friday at 6pm when it welcomes Johnson & Wales to Tripp Gym. The match also marks Senior Night for Kristjansdottir, Sanker and Wade.
