NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College field hockey team posted a pair of goals in the first and third quarters, going on to defeat UMass Dartmouth, 5-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday. With the win, the Pioneers move to 5-12 while the Corsairs are now 4-15 on the season.
The homestanding Pioneers jumped out to the early lead, capitalizing at 8:31 of the opening quarter as Annika Peterson drove the ball in past Corsairs goalie
Shane Cueman. With minutes remaining in the first quarter, Smith charged in on goal, firing in a pair of shots that were saved by Cueman. It was Callahan Day that found the back of the goal, connecting on a feed from Annie Wimsatt at 12:56.
After a scoreless second quarter of play, the Pioneers made it a three-goal advantage at the 35:30 mark as Ramsay Smith tallied. The home team pushed the margin to 4-0 less than ten minutes later as Ellie Szostalo fired one past Cueman through traffic at 42:53.
In the fourth quarter, the Corsairs had several chances as rookies
Arlene Johnson and
Kayla Crai each fired off shots on a UMass Dartmouth penalty corner, but Pioneers goalie Emma Newman was there for the saves.
The Pioneers saw five different players score as Newman earned the victory with four saves.
For the Corsairs, Cueman shouldered the loss, recording 25 saves on the night for a new career-high mark. Senior
Hannah Trombly came on for the final 15 minutes of the contest, making three saves, while sophomore defender
Sophia Bouffard recorded a defensive save - her 11th of the season.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action to conclude the regular season on Saturday, traveling to Vermont State University Castleton for an 11am Little East game.
