BRISTOL, R.I. – Powered by a four goal first quarter, the Roger Williams University field hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Bayside Field Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks are now 8-5 overall with the 7-0 win, while the Corsairs slip to 4-10 on the season.
The homestanding Hawks opened the scoring just 1:17 into the game as senior midfielder Ella Waryas guided the ball into the circle on the far side. Sending a shot toward the middle, the ball was tipped in front by junior forward Chelsea King.
Roger Williams made it a 2-0 lead minutes later, earning a penalty corner that saw the ball come out to sophomore midfielder Maddy Monahan at the top. Sending a pass to her left, junior forward Hannah Trimbrouck dribbled and fired through traffic for the tally.
The Hawks earned another penalty corner at the 5:28 mark, capitalizing for the 3-0 advantage. As the ball was inserted to the top of the circle, a quick pass over to Monahan on the left saw her shoot the ball past Trombly for the 3-0 lead.
Roger Williams pushed the margin to 4-0 at 9:44 as a flurry of action drew Trombly toward the right side of the cage. As the ball came loose to the middle, junior midfielder Lily Tobin was there to bank it into the open goal.
The Corsairs had a solid chance at the 12:34 mark, awarded a penalty corner for their first of the contest. Sophomore defender
Sophia Bouffard fired in a shot that was tipped wide in front to thwart the UMassD attack.
After a scoreless second quarter of action, the Corsairs came out on the attack, earning two quick penalty corners. The visitors got a big swing on the second quarter by graduate student midfielder and captain
Maggie McCafferty, but her shot was blocked 49 seconds into the frame.
Despite that momentum and a number of solid saves by Trombly, the Corsairs were unable to hold off RWU as King corralled a pass from the top of the arc on the penalty corner, sweeping the ball over to Emma Sheldon. Perched on the right side, Sheldon fired the ball into the open right corner at 32:36 for the 5-0 lead.
Late in the third stanza, the Corsairs had another strong change as rookie forward
Logan Diffley drove a shot in on the Hawks goal, but keeper Madi Hadley held strong, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard with a kick-save.
Fourth quarter action saw the Corsairs with another early chance as rookie midfielder
Kayla Crai fired in an attempt that was turned aside by Hawks goalie Hannah Brazil at 47:01. Trombly continued to play strong, saving a penalty shot attempt by junior forward Elizabeth Duquette, but was unable to hold off King, who banked in a pass from Duquette minutes later.
The Hawks added a final goal in the contest as King led all goal scorers in the match with two goals and an assist. Monahan added a goal and an assist as Jill Haudenshield earned the victory with one save. Meili Raspante came on to play the second quarter, while Hadley played the third and made two saves. Brazil played the final quarter and posted one stop.
For the Corsairs, McCafferty had two shots in the game, while in goal, Trombly recorded eight stops in the loss.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Monday, October 14, welcoming Bridgewater State to Cressy Field for a 7pm non-conference tilt.
