Men's Hockey Falls to Salem State in OT

Vikings post overtime game-winner with 1:08 remaining

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Junior winger Landyn Greatorex scored the game winning goal at 3:52 of overtime to lift Salem State past UMass Dartmouth, 3-2 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The victory moves the Vikings to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Corsairs slip to 4-4 with a 2-2 mark in MASCAC action.

Knotted at 2-all after a tally 27 seconds into the third period by rookie forward James Tatro, the Corsairs and Vikings both had a number of opportunities over the remainder of the third, but neither could capitalize.

The Vikings fired a pair of shots in on UMD keeper Marshall McKallip, while graduate student defenseman and captain Cade Hanley had the Corsairs final attempt in the waining seconds of regulation.

In the extra session, the 3v3 matchup came out in favor of the Vikings as rookie forward Jon Waselko sent a pass over to Greatorex, who roofed it up and over McKallip's shoulder for the game-winner.

The Corsairs opened the game's scoring just nine seconds into the opening period as sophomore center Collin Patterson tallied his 12th goal of the season off a feed from classmate and winger Alex Walker.

Sophomore winger Nolan Wutzke pushed the margin to 2-0 in favor of the home team at 8:13 of the first, banking it in off a shot from junior winger and assistant captain Brandon Clark.

The Vikings answered at 11:25, making it a 2-1 margin as junior forward Ryan Barrett fired home a shot off a great pass from classmate and forward Zach Dill. Rookie forward Nick Sweet earned the secondary assist.

Salem State goalie Will Nepveu recorded 19 saves in the victory, while McKallip stopped 31 shots on the night, including 14 in the third period.

UMass Dartmouth is now off for the holidays, but returns to action on January 3 when it travels to Boston to compete in the 59th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament. The Corsairs will face the host Beacons at 1pm.
