#23 Corsairs Take Down Southern Maine

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by the dual scoring efforts from grad student Carly Whiteside and senior Teja Andrews, who combined for 43 of the Corsairs 67 points, the #23 UMass Dartmouth women's basketball team overwhelmed Southern Maine, 67-40, in Little East action on Saturday. The win saw the Corsairs move to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the LEC. The Huskies drop to 10-13 with an 8-6 mark in conference play.
 
The Corsairs were paced by Whiteside, who posted 24 points and five rebounds, shooting 8 for 10 (80.0%) from the field, 2 for 2 (100.0%) from three-point range and 6 for 6 (100.0%) from the free throw line. Andrews poured in 19 points along with nine rebounds and four steals. Andrews was 8 for 14 (57.1%) from the floor and 2 for 2 (100.0%) from deep. As a unit, the Corsairs limited USM to a 23.2% day from the floor. 

Southern Maine, paced throughout by Vanessa Vaughan, saw the sophomore guard score 10 points while going 6 for 6 (100.0%) from the free throw line. No other scorers reached double figures. 

After the opening two quarters of play, UMass Dartmouth entered the third quarter with a 29-18 lead. Whiteside put up 12 first-half points, including the game's first seven points as she helped the Corsairs gather an early lead. 

At the 5:35 mark of the third quarter, The Corsairs were leading by 10 points before rattling off a 7-0 run that put them up, 45-28 with 3:02 left in the quarter. Southern Maine senior Liz Cote answered with a three-pointer that would be the last field goal made in the third quarter, with both teams trading free throws the rest of the way. UMass Dartmouth ended the quarter with a comfortable, 48-32 lead entering the fourth. 

The Corsairs saw their best quarter of play in the fourth, winning the individual frame by a margin of 19-8. UMD made a statement to start the fourth with a 14-2 run, featuring six points from Andrews and five more from Whiteside, along with a three-ball from senior Jaelyn Lavigne. The run put the Corsairs on top, 62-34, with just 3:10 remaining. The Corsairs were able to draing out the remaining time with some late-game scoring from their bench, cruising to a 67-40 win at the final horn. 
   
The Corsairs return to the Tripp Center on Wednesday, hosting Keene State in Little East action. Wednesday is also Senior Day, where UMass Dartmouth will honor graduate student Carly Whiteside prior to the 5:30pm tipoff.
