DAVENPORT, Fla. – Powered by a two-hit effort from freshman pitcher
Aidan Newhall, the UMass Dartmouth baseball team took a big victory over Emerson College, 9-3, on Monday. The Corsairs improve to 3-4 overall, while the Lions drop to 3-2 overall.
In five innings of work, Newhall was outstanding in his collegiate debut on the mound, striking out seven of the 19 batters he faced, allowing no runs and just two hits. The Corsairs got things going in the top of the fifth, when senior third baseman
Andrew Possi hit a two-out triple to right field. Senior
Tre Coleman reached on an infield error that scored Possi, followed by a single from sophomore outfielder
Brett Baker. With runners on first and third, the table was set for freshman shortstop
Cooper Wixon, who cracked a triple that brought in both base runners, giving the Corsairs a 3-0 lead through five.
UMass Dartmouth built onto their lead in the seventh, when a Baker sac fly brought home Coleman. Wixon, who already had a triple, crushed a home run over the left field fence. The Corsairs continued to pour it on in the eighth inning, tallying three more runs, as the relief pitching kept the Lions scoreless through eight.
Emerson was able to bring in three runs in the ninth, as the final out was recorded with UMD on top, 9-3.
The Corsairs are back at it tomorrow with a doubleheader against Widener University. The first pitch for game one is scheduled for 2:30pm in Auburndale, Florida.
