Balanced Attack Leads Corsairs to 18-4 Victory Over MMA

Five players net goals in lacrosse win over Buccaneers

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Behind a 15 goal first half and tallies from six different scorers, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy by an 18-4 score in non-conference action on Wednesday night. The Corsairs move to 3-2 overall, while the Buccaneers slip to 2-5 on the season.

The Corsairs opened the game in fine fashion as senior midfielder Widline Thomas recorded back-to-back hard fought goals in the opening two minutes of action. Rookie midfielder Maddy Allen then buried a feed from classmate Lily Nees as the home team opened a 3-0 margin at 11:41.

It was senior attack Hannah Mitus at the 10:12 mark as she fired home an outstanding feed by senior midfielder Melanny Sanchez Alvarez, moving the score to a 4-0 margin. The visiting Buccaneers answered at 7:39 as rookie attack Sarah Naar caught a quick pass from junior midfielder Lindsy Durgin on the clear, banking it past Corsairs keeper Kelsie Couto, but a 5-0 run, including three goals from Sanchez Alvarez and two from Allen saw UMass Dartmouth with the 9-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

Second quarter action continued much like the first as the Corsairs saw Mitus and rookie attack Jennifer Lins each score on the man-down opportunity. Allen then buried a pair of goals at 10:42 and 7:05, pushing the margin to 13-1.

In the final 5:28 of the frame, Thomas netted her third tally on the man-up, while Nees recorded back-to-back goals as well, including another on the man-up advantage.
