Corsairs Women's Track & Field Posts Strong Finish in Outdoor Opener

UMass Dartmouth sees solid finishes in first home meet of 2024

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - It was an outstanding day of action for the UMass Dartmouth women's track & field team as they hosted the 2024 Corsair Classic to kickoff the outdoor season. The Corsairs finished fourth of 12 teams at this year's meet, paced by a number of strong finishes.

The field events was packed with outstanding efforts, beginning in the hammer throw as rookie Emily Hesketh claimed victory with a throw of 42.74 meters (140' 3"). Junior Neisha Boiteux took fifth overall with a mark of 37.75 meters (123' 10"), while sophomore Lauren Donlan was 10th with a throw of 32.47 meters (106' 6").

In the javelin throw, junior Mia Mejia-Maalouf posted sixth overall with a throw of 30.03 meters (98' 6"), while sophomore Grace Russell posted eighth with a mark of 27.65 meters (90' 9"). Next up in the shot put, senior Amanda Little took third overall with a mark of 10.53 meters (34' 6.5"), while classmate Kate Hockenbury was fifth with a throw of 10.27 meters (33' 8.25"). Boiteux posted sixth with a distance of 10.12 meters (33' 2.5"), while Hesketh was ninth with a throw of 9.77 meters (32' 0.75").

The high jump saw sophomore Isabella Taccogna placed eighth overall with a height of 1.42 meters (4' 8") as she went on to finish 11th overal in the long jump with a mark of 4.29 meters (14' 1"). The final field event - the discus - saw Boiteux post second overall with a throw of 34.39 meters (112' 10"). Hesketh was fourth with a throw of 32.56 meters (106' 10"), while Littel was seventh with a mark of 32.13 meters (105' 5").

In the 4x100-meter relay, rookies Allie Kimball and Briana Caman, along with Taccogna and sophomore Petrashea Johnson combined to finish third overall with a time of 53.94. In the 3000-meter steeplechase, junior Bee Greenberg posted an outstanding finish, taking runner-up with a time of 12:35.37. Graduate student Emma Steedman was close behind in third with a time of 12:42.05, while junior Julia Latura powered to fifth in a time of 13:06.88.

The 1500-meter run saw rookie Sophie Owen post 23rd overall in 5:50.38, as classmate Kyla Palmer was 21st in the 400-meter dash in 1:15.88. The 100-meter dash saw Johnson post 13th overall with a time of 13.62, while in the 400-meter hurdles, Russell was third overall with a time of 1:10.99. Caman also finished strong, posting sixth in the 400-hurdles with a mark of 1:15.36.

In the 800-meter run, Gerardi took 20th in a time of 3:03.68, while Kimball went on to place 12th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.65. The 5000-meters saw junior Anya Aadland take sixth overall with a time of 20:20.75, while rookie Sarah Lynch also finished strong, posting ninth in 21:20.86.

In the final event of the afternoon - the 4x400-meter relay - Steedman, Latura, Aadland and Greenberg combined to place third overall with a time of 4:34.41. The Corsairs other relay of Lynch, Owen, Gerardi and rookie Serena Carnes also placed strong, taking sixth overall in 5:19.21.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday when it travels to New London, Conn., for the Coast Guard Spring Invitational.
