Corsairs Shoulder Tough Loss To Regis

Sanchez Alvarez posts four goals in 14-10 defeat

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Regis's Hope Alto recorded a game-best eight goals as the Pride defeated UMass Dartmouth, 14-10 in non-conference action on Saturday on Cressy Field. The visiting Pride move to 2-1 on the season, while the homestanding Corsairs are now 1-2 overall.
 
It was a back-and-forth battle to open the game as senior captain Melanny Sanchez Alvarez scored at 11:41, quickly followed two minutes later as Alto registered her first to tie it. A score from senior captain Widline Thomas followed at 5:33, but Alto once again tallied, evening it up at 2-all with 1:36 to play.
 
The Corsairs saw Sanchez Alvarez drop another tally in at 1:10, followed by the first collegiate tally from rookie midfielder Lily Nees with seven seconds left – giving the home team the 5-2 advantage.
 
In the second quarter, Sanchez Alvarez once again scored, followed by the third of the contest from Alto as well. Regis got a score by Audrey Mason to close the gap to 5-4, but a score from Thomas made it a 6-4 advantage at 8:41.
 
Alto answered for the Pride once more, scoring back-to-back goals to tie it at 6-all, as a score by Kylee Marley gave the visitors their first lead of the contest. The fourth score of the game by Sanchez Alvarez tied things up, but another Alto goal made it an 8-7 margin for Regis.
 
Rookie defender Maddie Beaumont recorded her first collegiate tally with 12:41 to play pulled it to 8—8, but a three-goal run from Regis, including two more from Alto, pulled the visitors out to the 11-8 score.
 
Despite goals from Thomas and senior attack Hannah Mitus, the Corsairs could not overcome the Regis offense as the Pride tacked on three goals in the fourth enroute to the 14-10 final score.
 
Alto led all scorers with eight goals, adding two ground balls with a caused turnover and nine draw controls. She was also a perfect 2-for-2 on the free position. Marley added three goals with five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Madeline Conover had two goals with a helper. Mason added a goal with two assists. In goal, Allayna Martone earned the victory, stopping two shots in goal during the second half of action. Daniela Mazo played the opening quarters, making four stops.
 
For the Corsairs, Sanchez Alvarez finished with four goals, a game-best eight ground balls, adding two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Thomas had three scores with three draw controls, while Mitus had a goal with two assists. Rookie midfielder Jennifer Lins finished with a game-high three assists as rookie Maddy Allen posted three ground balls with seven draw controls.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Monday, March 18, traveling to Milton, Mass., for a 4pm tilt at Curry College.
