Corsairs Baseball Bested at Babson College

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Powered by dominant showing from the pitchers for the Beavers, Babson College defeated UMass Dartmouth, 10-3 on Monday afternoon. The Beavers move to 10-6 overall, while the Corsairs slip to 8-11 overall.

The Beavers struck first with two runs in the second inning and never looked back. The first run of the game was brought in by Babson freshman outfielder Alexander Wilson's RBI double. Freshman infielder Dante D'Avanzo followed him up with an RBI sac-fly. The Beavers poured in an additional five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by four different batters recording hits along with multiple UMD fielding errors in the inning.

The Corsairs were unable to get their bats going early, with Babson's sophomore starting pitcher Connor Doan having a solid outing on the mound. He allowed no runs over 7.0 innings of work on seven hits with three strikeouts. Doan recorded his first win of the season.

While trailing 10-0 going into the ninth inning, the Corsairs began to find their way at the plate. Junior second baseman Devyn Vezina led off the inning with a double down the left field line for his second hit of the game. Grad student Joe Muzio was walked, before senior third baseman Andrew Possi singled to load up the bases with no outs. Senior Tre Coleman knocked in the Corsairs' first run on a fielders choice grounder to the shortstop. Junior first baseman Jake SanAntonio singled to center to bring in run number two. After a wild pitch advanced both base runners into scoring position, a single from senior outfielder Matt Klett brought the score to 10-3 with one out in the ninth. Babson junior reliever Matt Milone was able to retire the final two batters to escape with the 10-3 victory.

UMD grad student pitcher Ryan Qualey shouldered the loss. He went 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. The Corsairs' bats were led by SanAntonio, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Vezina also went 2-for-4 with a run. Freshman shortstop Cooper Wixon went 2-for-4 from the plate and was left stranded twice.

The Beavers saw Wilson go 3-for-5 with three RBI's and a run. Sophomore DH Ryan Hvozdovic went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs. Junior first baseman Justin Guest was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs.

UMass Dartmouth baseball is back at it on Thursday, taking on Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30pm in Dartmouth.
