DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The UMass Dartmouth Softball team honored their graduating senior class of
Kaitlyn Shirshac,
Dyonna Rodas,
Rahne Turley and
Hailey Lyons following their doubleheader with Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.
Game one saw the Corsairs fall 4-1, before falling short 6-3 in game two. The Corsairs move to 22-10 overall and 8-4 within the conference, while the Huskies improve to 21-9 overall and boast a 7-5 LEC record.
In game one, it was the Corsairs who struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. The runner was brought in on an RBI-single from first baseman
Hailey Lyons. The Huskies responded with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Southern Maine's runs came in on a two-RBI single from senior outfielder Makena Mulcahey.
USM's senior pitcher Belle Snyder was outstanding from the circle, only allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. Meanwhile, Shirshac shouldered the loss for the Corsairs. She pitched all 7.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Southern Maine was able to build onto their 2-1 early lead with runs in the fourth and seventh innings, going on to take the game one victory over UMass Dartmouth, 4-1.
In game two, the Huskies continued their momentum from the first game with a quick pair of runs in the top of the first. Both runs scored on a base hit from grad student outfielder Hannah Shields. The Corsairs narrowed their deficit to just one after an RBI single from freshman catcher
Olivia Silva in the second inning.
Southern Maine added to their lead in the middle stretch of innings, tallying runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Huskies led by as much as 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. The Corsairs threatened a comeback, scoring runs in the fifth and seventh innings, both on RBI-singles off Lyons' bat. But UMass Dartmouth was unable to overcome the deficit, ultimately falling to Southern Maine 6-3 in game two.
For the Huskies, sophomore hurler Lexus McIntosh picked up the win from the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. From the plate, USM saw Shields go a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI's. Junior DP Abby Miner went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored, and Snyder was 3-for-5 and scored two runs.
Senior hurler
Rahne Turley shouldered the game two loss for the Corsairs. She allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. From the plate, Lyons led the way, going 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Silva also went 2-for-4 from the plate and had an RBI.
The Corsairs are back at it on Tuesday, traveling to Keene State for a Little East Conference twin bill with the Owls. First pitch is set for 3:00pm in Keene, N.H.
