FRANKLIN, Mass. - Behind goals from five different scorers, the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team posted a 5-1 victory at Dean College in the season opener for both teams. It marks the second straight season opening win for second-year head coach
Anika Goodhue.
It was an outstanding day of action for the Corsairs as one rookie notched their first collegiate goal, while another added her first collegiate point.Â
The Corsairs opened the games scoring at the 21:14 mark as senior midfielder and captain
Jenna Carvalho corralled a pass from rookie forward
Kenzie Bliven, burying it for the first tally. Sophomore defender
Sophia Bouffard then pushed the visitors ahead less than five minutes later. Collecting a pass from classmate and forward
Brooke Lydon, Bouffard slammed it home past Bulldogs keeper Allie Stockwell for the 2-0 margin.
Third quarter action saw UMass Dartmouth tack on another score as grad student midfielder and captain
Maggie McCafferty capitalized at 42:56. The Bulldogs countered early into the final quarter as Emily Yazzetti found an opening past Corsairs senior goalie
Hannah Trombly to pull it to within two (3-1), but goals from sophomore forward
Sam King and rookie midfielder
Kayla Crai sealed the win in the final stanza.
UMass Dartmouth held a 9-7 shots on goal advantage, aided by the solid efforts of Trombly, who finished with six saves on the afternoon. Stockwell was credited with four saves in the game.
The Corsairs return to the field on Sunday, traveling to Lasell University for a 1pm non-conference tilt.Â
