DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team opened their 2024 season at home with a tie, 3-3, against Framingham State on Friday afternoon during non-conference action at Cressy Field. Head coach
Andrew Schaefer, entering his first season at the helm, begins the year 0-1-0 for the Corsairs.
The Rams kicked off the scoring with an early goal by Bryce Borletto-McCray off the assist from Jose Figueroa to put the visitors up 1-0 in the opening 10 minutes of the game. A few minutes later, senior captain
Justin Petrillo found the back of the net with fellow captain senior Joey Pavia credited with the helper.
The Corsairs continued to apply pressure to Framingham's backline firing off seven shots to force two saves from Rams goalkeeper Timothy Singleton. Joao De Aquino shifted the momentum back to Framingham with his goal at the 29:17 mark to take a 2-1 lead. The visitors would record the last four shot attempts of the half featuring a stop by junior goalkeeper
Ethan Donahue.
Framingham extended their advantage to 3-1 as De Aquino buried the ball into the top right corner off the assist from Gustav Hemmingsen. A couple minutes after taking the two-goal lead, the Rams were forced to play down a man following a red card given to Hemmingsen at the 64
th minute.
On the third corner kick of the afternoon for UMass Dartmouth, senior
Braeden LeClair delivered the ball into the box finding Petrillo who headed it into the top netting to make it a 3-2 game. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest, the Corsairs earned a freekick in a dangerous area just outside the penalty box.
LeClair stepped up to take the kick and drilled the ball over Singleton's hands to tie the score at 3-3. Both teams registered late shots in the final minutes of play, but the game would end tied at 3-3.
UMass Dartmouth held a 23-15 advantage in total shots including a 12-5 margin in shots on goal. The Corsairs also won the corner kick battle with 11 in comparison to the Rams with just two corner kicks.
Petrillo led the Corsair attack with his two goals along with six total shots. LeClair notched his first goal of the year with the game-tying score, recording three total shots on frame, as well as an assist. Pavia ended the day with a team-high eight total shots and four on target along with an assist.
Donahue, making his UMass Dartmouth debut in net, made two saves and allowed three goals after playing the entire contest. Singleton posted seven stops for the Rams and allowed three goals.
The Corsairs are on the road for their next non-conference tilt on Sunday, Sept. 1 facing Curry College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm from Milton, Mass.
