DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's volleyball team split results on Saturday during the season home opening tri-match from the Tripp Athletic Center. The Corsairs took down Lasell University, 3-1 (25-27, 19-25, 25-21, 20-25), after falling 1-3 (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14) against Emerson College in the first match of the day.
Against Emerson in the opening match, UMass Dartmouth took the first set 25-20. The Lions would go on to win the next three straights sets to hand the Corsairs their first home loss by a 3-1 final score.
The Lasers started the second match of the day by snagging a 5-3 lead following a kill by Eliana Baran. The Corsairs took their first lead of the contest thanks to a kill by senior Monkia Kristjansdottir to go up 7-6. After Wade tallied her second kill of the match to put the Corsairs ahead 11-9, the Lasers regained the lead with a 6-2 run to make it 15-13 Lasell.
Sophomore
Maddie Carter and Pate each registered a kill apiece to help even the score up at 21-21 late in the opening set. Lasell made it set point after Emily VanHouten's kill, but UMass Dartmouth stayed alive winning the next three consecutive points to level the score at 24-24. First year
Olivia Seutter tacked on a point to set up Kristjansdottir's kill to cement the 1-0 lead by a final score of 27-25.
The Corsairs jumped out to a quick 4-0 edge in set two featuring two consecutive kills from Wade. The Lasers fought back to even the score up at 5-5 before the home team pulled away 9-6 highlighted by a kill and service ace from Wade.
Lasell answered by generating a 6-1 run midway through the set to reclaim a 12-10 lead. Wade and Seutter helped kick off a 5-1 run response to go ahead 15-13. UMass Dartmouth pulled away with a 25-19 win in the second set, with the deciding kill by Pate to go up 2-0 in the match.
Seutter disrupted a 4-1 run by Lasell early in the third set with her kill off the assist from
Skye Peters. The Corsairs kept it close before tying the score at 16-16 thanks to an ace by junior
Sabrina Bordone. The Lasers pulled away with a late run to help them secure a 25-21 win in the third set heading into the fourth.
After Morgan Bogli put the Lasers up 8-4 with her kill, the Corsairs strung four points together featuring a kill apiece from Pate and Kristjansdottir to make it 8-8. Lasell battled back to level the score at 16-16, but UMass Dartmouth answered with 6-1 run to go ahead 22-17. The Corsairs sealed their win over the Lasers in the fourth set, 25-20, to earn their first home win of the season by a final score of 3-1.
Wade lead the Corsairs with a team-high 13 kills against the Lasers along with two aces, 16 digs and one block. Bordone had 23 assists in the win while Peters recorded 21 assists. Carter and Sanker each ended the match with four blocks for UMass Dartmouth. Pate tallied a team-high three service aces along with a season-high 11 kills to help secure the victory for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth are back home on Monday, Sept. 16 to host Nichols College at 6:00 pm from the Tripp Athletic Center for non-conference action.
