DARTMOUTH, Mass. – In non-conference action, the UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team were shutout by Coast Guard Academy, 3-0, on Tuesday evening. The Corsairs dropped to a 1-5-1 overall record following the loss to the Bears who improved to 7-0-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Mario Rodriguez fired the opening shot of the game with a strike towards the bottom left corner that Bears goalkeeper Connor Hickey was able to scope up for the stop. In the 11
th minute of the contest, the Bears had a breakaway resulting in a shot by Cole Miller that was blocked before Brennan King tapped the ball past a diving
Cole Travers to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
The Coast Guard continued to push their attack as King once again found the back of the net at the 14:19 mark to double the Bears advantage. A few minutes later, senior
Justin Petrillo had a scoring opportunity off a corner kick attempt in the 22
nd minute. His shot, however, was cleared out of danger by a Bears defender to keep the Corsairs off the scoreboard.
The Bears kicked off the second half registering nine shot attempts in the first 15 minutes of action featuring four saves by Travers. Senior
Andrew Pacheco ripped a shot that sailed over the crossbar and out of play.
Nicholas Yorgason notched the third goal for the Coast Guard at the 64:05 mark to put the Bears ahead 3-0 in the game. The Corsairs started gaining momentum and possessing the ball in the remaining 20 minutes of play. UMass Dartmouth posted the final six shot attempts of the match, including two shots by fifth year
Joey Paiva, but the Bears cemented the win by a final score of 3-0.
The Coast Guard outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 15-9 margin along with a 10-2 edge in shots on-goal. The Bears also held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks in the contest. Rodriguez and Petrillo each recorded a shot on target while Paiva ended the night with two total shots.
King led the attack for the Bears with his brace after firing three shot attempts while Yorgason netted the third goal of the game for the Coast Guard.
Travers made his season debut in net for the Corsairs posting six total saves and allowing three goals after playing the entire game. Hickey picked up the shutout for the Bears with one save on the night.
UMass Dartmouth opens Little East Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 28 hosting the University of Southern Maine at 7:00 pm from Cressy Field.
