DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by 17 service aces, the UMass Dartmouth women's volleyball team defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-6) in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Corsairs improve to 11-3 on the season, while the Buccaneers slip to 2-6.
The home team was paced by rookie right side
Olivia Seutter, who notched 12 kills with no errors on 18 attempts for a .667 percentage. She added two block assists and a dig. Senior outside hitter
Kate Wade posted seven kills and just three errors on 26 swings, adding an assist, an ace and four digs, while junior defensive specialist
Emily Pogorelec notched a match-best six aces with 11 digs on the night. Sophomore setter
Skye Peters added 19 assists with four aces and six digs.
For the Buccaneers, sophomore opposite Gemma Geisler had four kills with four digs. Junior setter Shayla Narodowg added a kill with five assists, a block solo and a block assist, to go along with seven digs.
The Corsairs opened a commanding 15-2 advantage, paced by four aces from Pogorelec, including three straight at the end of the stretch. Kills from Wade and sophomore outside hitter
Allison Pate pushed the margin to 18-5, but a pair of errors helped pull the Buccaneers to within 18-7. UMass Dartmouth went on two 3-0 runs, taking advantage of a service error for the set victory.
Second set saw a tighter battle as a kill from rookie outside hitter Alanys Torres made it a 5-3 score in favor of the Corsairs. The visitors continued to keep it close, but a 6-0 run, aided by two kills from Seutter and a pair of aces from Peters, opened up a 14-6 advantage for UMassD.
Mass. Maritime saw senior defensive specialist Marlo Stark lay down an ace to make it a 16-10 deficit, but three straight from the Corsairs – including a Pogorelec ace, made it 19-10. A balanced attack down the stretch, which included kills from Pate and senior opposite
Chelsea Sanker, helped the home team to the set win and a 2-0 lead.
Third set saw the Corsairs relinquish the first point, but counter with a 10-0 run, aided by three kills from Seutter and three aces from Pate. Leading 13-4, the Corsairs saw a 6-0 run move the score to 19-4, powered by back-to-back aces from junior setter
Sabrina Bordone. UMass Dartmouth went on another 5-0 run to close out the match as senior middle blocker
Monika Kristjansdottir added two service aces of her own in the set victory.
The Corsairs return to action on Saturday, traveling to Williams College for contests against the homestanding Ephs (12pm) and Middlebury College (2:30pm) in Williamstown, Mass.
