Men's Soccer Falls in Narrow Loss to Salem State, 2-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team fell against the Vikings of Salem State University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 2-1 during non-conference action at Cressy Field. The Corsairs drop to an 0-3-1 overall record while the Vikings secure their second victory of the season.

Salem State registered the first shot on target of the game as Aaron O'Toole forced a save from Corsair goalkeeper Ethan Donahue. The Vikings continued to apply pressure on the Corsairs backline as Donahue came up with two more saves.

O'Toole put the visitors on the scoreboard with a laser into the top right corner of the net to give the Vikings a 1-0 edge. UMass Dartmouth had a late corner kick chance in the final seconds of the first half, but Salem State would hold their one goal advantage heading into the break.

The Corsairs started the second half strong as senior Joey Pavia ripped an early shot. First year Daniel Jordan and senior Braeden LeClair also registered a shot apiece for the Corsairs forcing a save from Vikings goalkeeper Marcelo Silva. The momentum soon shifted to the home side as senior Justin Petrillo headed the ball over Silva off a corner kick delivery from sophomore Matt Kobrenski to tie the game up at 1-1 with just under 15 minutes left in the contest.

The game went back-and-forth approaching the end of regulation until Salem State capitalized in the 85th minute. Kyle Lobao did a give-and-go outside the penalty box with Matheus Pelissari before squeezing the ball past Donahue into the bottom right corner to take back a 2-1 lead.

The Vikings had an opportunity to extend their advantage after earning a late penalty kick at the 88th minute. Pelissari stepped up for Salem State to take the penalty kick and tried to bury the ball to Donahue's right. Donahue recorded the penalty kick save before denying Pelissari's follow-up shot off the rebound.

UMass Dartmouth continued to battle in the final seconds but Salem State secured the win by a final score 2-1. The Vikings held a 23-13 edge in total shots in the game along with a 10-5 advantage in shots on-goal.

Petrillo notched his third goal of the season for UMass Dartmouth while Kobrenski tallied his first assist of the year. Jordan led the Corsairs with two shots on frame on three attempts while sophomore Mario Rodriguez also posted three shot attempts. Donahue picked up the loss after playing the full 90 minutes in net registering eight total saves and allowing just two goals. Silva recorded four stops in the contest and allowed one goal for the Vikings.

The Corsairs are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 traveling to Westfield State University for a non-conference tilt against the Owls. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 am from Westfield, Mass.
