Men's Hockey Falls to Nichols in Non-Conference Action

Corsairs score third period tally in tough loss to Bison

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Powered by a solid offensive effort in the first two periods of play, the Nichols College men's hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Tuesday at Hetland Arena. The Bison move to 6-8-2 overall, while the Corsairs are now 8-7-0 on the season.

The Bison got things going in the first period as a power play goal from Jack Lee banked in past the reach of rookie goalie Samuel Boos at 8:19. Credited with the assists were Nathan Carl, who dug the puck out and passed it from behind the net, and Ryan Austin.

Late in the frame, Nichols once again took advantage as Dimitri Voyatzis connected off a feed from Lee with James Berg adding the second assist at 17:29, followed just over a minute later by a tally from Carl as Zach Vandale and Aaron Hamel added the helpers for the 3-0 lead.

In the second period, Aidan Flynn continued to the offensive front at 3:05, scoring unassisted for a 4-0 advantage. Austin then connected on a pass from Hamel for a short handed marker at 9:50, followed by another tally from Carl. Hamel once again earned the assist, his third for the contest to make it a 6-0 score at 17:19.

UMass Dartmouth got on the board at 14:41 of the third period as junior defender Hank McDonough winged the puck down the ice from the Corsairs zone. Rookie left wing Blake Kashark sent a quick pass over to junior winger Vincent Nicosia to cut the deficit.

But Nichols goalie Nick Anderson proved solid in the waning minutes, finishing with 22 saves for the victory. Boos shouldered the loss for the Corsairs, recording 20 saves, while fellow rookie Ethan Labbe came on late in the second period, recording 19 saves.

The Corsairs are back in action on Thursday when they host Westfield State at Hetland Arena. The MASCAC tilt begins at 7:30pm.
