Corsairs shoulder tough loss to Bears in non-league action

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Powered by a goal in the 79th minute, Bridgewater State University posted a 1-0 win over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Bears improve to 8-5-1 overall, while the Corsairs are now 6-7-1 on the season.

Battling through a scoreless contest, it was a corner kick in the 79th minute off the foot of senior midfielder Filippo Mucci that sailed into the box. Battling for position, junior midfielder Tyler Chang prevailed, getting a foot on it as it banked in past Corsairs goalie Ethan Donahue for the go-ahead tally.

The Corsairs worked to answer soon after as a shot from senior defender Peter Kerrigan was turned aside by Bears' goalie Kyle Sullivan, while an attempt by rookie midfielder Elijah Beltran went high and away from the goal in the 80th minute.

Despite the momentum, UMass Dartmouth was unable to get the equalizer as Bridgewater State held solid control of the ball down the stretch.

After a defensive battle in the opening half of action, the second stanza saw the Corsairs rebound in the 51st minute with their first shot on goal of the contest. Senior midfielder and captain Mario Rodriguez fired a shot in on Sullivan that saw a diving stop. The rebound caromed out to rookie forward Dave Doirain as his attempt was blocked by the Bears' defense.

The Corsairs continued to try to break through, but it was the Bears that finally found the back of the net on the goal by Chang.

Donahue - who made several point-blank stops in the contest - finished with four saves in net for the Corsairs, while his counterpart, Sullivan stopped two. The Bears owned a 12-7 margin in shots, including a 5-2 edge on goal for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, hosting Plymouth State at 12pm on Cressy Field on Blue & Gold Weekend!
