Women's Soccer Defeats Mass. Maritime Academy, 3-0

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of the Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 3-0, on Tuesday night during non-conference action from Cressy Field. The Corsairs improved to a 5-6-3 overall record with the victory over the Buccaneers who dropped to a 1-12 mark on the season.

The Corsairs were on the attack early in the opening minutes of the game, firing six shots to force a pair of saves from Buccaneers goalkeeper Brady Deschamps. In the 15th minute, first year Ainsley Christensen slipped a pass to classmate Emilie Trainque down the left flank. Trainque then ripped a low shot on frame that nestled into the bottom left corner to give UMass Dartmouth a quick 1-0 edge. The Corsairs continued to put pressure on Mass. Maritime's backline as first year Kiariana Williams drilled three consecutive strikes on target that Deschamps was able to stop.

At the 23:39 mark, first year Rieanna Murray doubled the Corsairs advantage after scoring her second goal of the season. The rookie midfielder spun her defender before driving into open space to rip a long-range shot and slot the ball into the back of the net for the second time this year. Senior Ashlyn Aguiar and junior Aba Broglino each posted a shot on target in the closing minutes of the half as the home squad maintained their 2-0 lead at halftime.

UMass Dartmouth picked up where they left registering seven strikes in the opening five minutes of the second half. Around the 65th minute, Christensen lasered a shot on frame followed by another quick strike by first year Natalie Frazier to force two saves from Deschamps. The Corsairs extended their lead to 3-0 after capitalizing on counterattack in the 74th minute of the contest. First year Isla Thompson carried the ball through the midfield before dishing out a pass to Murray on the right-hand side. Murray sprinted past her defender to send a centering cross in front of the Buccaneers goal where Williams was ready to tap the ball in for her fourth score of the year. The visitors tallied two late shots in the game, but UMass Dartmouth sealed their fifth victory of the season by a final score of 3-0 from Cressy Field.
